Preparing for Your Best Ski or Snowboard Holiday

Planning an exciting ski or snowboard holiday? Whether you are a seasoned skier or heading to the snow for the first time, preparing your body is just as important as packing the right gear. Without adequate preparation, the combination of unfamiliar movements, high intensity activity, and long days on the slopes can significantly increase your risk of injury—and potentially cut your holiday short.

At Seaforth Physio on the Northern Beaches, we specialise in helping individuals get “snow fit” so they can maximise enjoyment and minimise setbacks. Using advanced assessment tools such as VALD ForceDecks and handheld dynamometers, our team can identify your specific strengths and weaknesses. From there, we design a tailored program to build resilience, strength, and endurance—giving you confidence to tackle the slopes safely.

Why Preparation Matters

Research shows that individuals with low baseline fitness who suddenly expose themselves to demanding sports like skiing and snowboarding face the greatest risk of injury. These sports require a combination of strength, endurance, power, agility, and balance—skills that most of us do not use in everyday activities. Without a solid fitness foundation, your body is less able to adapt to the unique demands of snow sports.

General Fitness Guidelines

Current health guidelines recommend maintaining at least:

  • 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per week (running, swimming, cycling, or circuit training), and

  • 2–3 strength training sessions per week.

This level of fitness not only improves your general health, but also ensures your muscles, joints, and cardiovascular system are ready for the physical demands of a ski holiday.

Snow-Specific Training

As your trip approaches, it is important to move beyond general training and incorporate snow sport-specific exercises. Skiing and snowboarding involve repeated actions of balance, speed, quick directional changes, and powerful turning or braking. By training these skills beforehand, you reduce your risk of common injuries such as knee sprains, ligament tears, or muscle strains.
