Swimmer’s Shoulder

Did you know the average swimmer completes over one million strokes each year? With such repetitive movements, it’s no surprise that shoulder pain is the most common musculoskeletal issue experienced by swimmers.

The term “Swimmer’s Shoulder” encompasses a variety of conditions. At Seaforth Physio on the Northern Beaches, we provide a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause and create a tailored treatment plan to guide your recovery.

Effective management often combines hands-on therapy with a personalised exercise program. While one of the most important factors in recovery is adjusting training load to a safe and sustainable level, specific exercises can accelerate progress. Importantly, these exercises must be selected based on each individual’s presentation—there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

To assist your physiotherapist, it’s helpful to consider when during the stroke cycle your pain occurs:

  1. The Catch – Pain when the arm is fully extended and engaging the water may indicate reduced shoulder blade rotation, insufficient trunk rotation, or weakness in the lats in a lengthened position.

  2. The Pull – Pain during the pulling phase may suggest poor lat engagement, often seen in swimmers who allow the shoulders to round forward.

  3. The Recovery – Pain when the arm exits the water and comes overhead may be linked to inadequate trunk rotation or weakness in the muscles responsible for retracting the shoulder blade.

These examples highlight the importance of identifying stroke-specific contributors. Other factors—such as head position or lower-body alignment—can also place additional stress on the shoulders. For instance, looking forward or allowing the legs to sink increases drag, forcing the arms to work harder.

If you are experiencing shoulder pain, consult Seaforth Physio—your local shoulder specialists. We will guide you with a clear, structured approach to recovery. Remember, it’s not just about external rotation exercises; comprehensive assessment and tailored management are key.
